Our Mission

SPAN is a partnership between grassroots African NGOs (non governmental organizations) and volunteers from around the world who uphold SPAN’s commitment to sustainable development, uplifting human rights, and equal opportunity for personal and community growth.

SPAN recognizes volunteers as a source of talent, experience, and energy; real assets which can produce real results. By working together in honest and transformational partnerships, individuals, households, and grassroots organizations can create opportunities for change while solving seemingly impossible issues.

Yet most volunteers and funding opportunities are not connected to the very organizations which need them most. SPAN works to bridge this divide.

Current Events

  • SPAN recently entered into a partnership with Morokoshi, a holistic school on rural farmland near Nakuru, Kenya. SPAN has already completed several projects with Morokoshi, including sharing teaching methods and materials with its teachers, and building a self-contained solar power generating system so that the schoolchildren have a place to study in the evenings. Ultimately, it is Morokoshi’s goal to gain donation of one or more computers so that the young students have a more comprehensive learning environment and gain important technical skills. SPAN is pleased to welcome Morokoshi as a Partner Organization, and welcomes new volunteers to apply for a placement in this beautiful, rural setting, as well as donations on their behalf. • SPAN has recently opened a new office in Zambia, and is currently accepting applications for several volunteer placements there. Please check our Partners page frequently for updates.
  • In January of 2008, during the challenging uprising following the elections, SPAN was successful in raising over $3000 USD in just one week. The funds were wired directly to SPAN Executive Board Member Cameron Dunkin, who worked with Pistis founder Gladys Wekesa to secure food and clothing for the existing and new arrival orphans.
  • Several SPAN volunteers are in Kenya this summer working with WAKIBE and WOFAK. SPAN Directors and volunteers were also on-site in Nakuru, Kenya in the spring of 2008, working with Pistis Academy & Orphanage, the Baobab Branch School, and the Morokoshi Nursery & Kindergarten
